Blacklight or UV ink is another great way of tattooing your body and expressing yourself. The best part about this type of tattoo is that the tattoo will not be visible in ordinary light, but will be visible only in blacklight. Blacklight tattoos are becoming more and more popular these days. Many people, because of the newness of this technique, have been intrigued by the idea but are also waiting to hear what the long term outcome and testimonials from others is. The majority of people who have gotten black light tattoos are happy and have not had any adverse affects.

Blacklight or UV tattoos have become very popular with the “ravers”. In normal light, you may see a little of the scarring that goes along with getting a tattoo, but you will see no ink. Then turn on a blacklight, and the UV tattoo will glow in colors from white to purple, depending on what ink was used.

There is also visible ink that you can use to get inked that will show in visible light, and then glow very brightly under a blacklight. However, these inks are not as colorful and vibrant as regular tattoo ink can be. UV ink is a special kind of ink that will only glow under ultraviolet light. These specially made inks contain substances that will absorb the high energy ultraviolet rays for a fraction of a second. Then they are released and the released energy makes the tattoo glow. There are many different colors of UV ink. The titanium white ink will leave no visible mark on your skin in normal light.

There have been many questions and topics about the safety of the blacklight tattoo. The FDA has done considerable testing of it in order to find out just how safe it is and it has been proven to be as harmless as a regular tattoo. Blacklight ink has been reportedly used for the past ten years and there has never been an issue of complaint against this type of ink used in body art. Researches and studies conducted have proven that black light body art does not contain phosphors which burn the skin.

Some people have had some allergic reactions to the skin, but this is also the case for normal ink tattoos. Some suspect that the blacklight ink may contain allergens and carcinogens, but no study has actually proved this to be the case. There are only a few different brands of UV ink licenced for use in the United States. Some experts have warned against using UV ink, but again they have no real evidence to back this warning.

Because of its glowing properties, many people think that blacklight inks are radio active in nature, in reality the inks are not made of any chemicals that can hurt you and are definitely not made with radioactive materials. In order for the ink pigment to glow under a blacklight, many companies that make different products that “glow in the dark” have added a chemical called Ever Glow to their product. This additive is said to be very harmful and can cause real damage to the skin. However, the ink used in UV tattoos does NOT include any trace of this chemical in the ink. The ink used in blacklight tattoo’s contents include 97 percent Polymethylmethacrylate and two and a half percent fluorescent dye. Again, this has not been proven to be at all harmful to the skin.

There are several myths that this ink causes some types of skin cancer, which again is a total fallacy and no proof at all exists to back this claim. Tests performed by the FDA have proven that the blacklight reactive ink is harmless and contains no carcinogens whatsoever. This same ink is also used for tracking animals in the wild, especially some types of fish, which we serve at our dinner tables, and is found to have no harmful side effects on humans. There should be no fear of the ink blowing and spreading out into the outer layers of skin around the tattoo, as the ink is contained with micro capsules and coated with a PMMA shell. The overall research done on black light reactive tattoos has proven that this type of tattoo is safe for use anywhere tattoos are done.

Ultraviolet Tattoo

Just like any other new and interesting techniques there will be myths and facts that get tangled with the truth. My best advice is research the artist that you wish to do your UV reactive tattoo and make sure that they have done them before. Some tattoo artists that have tested the ink say that the glowing ink is a little different texture and in some cases harder to work with, and other artists simply refuse to work with UV inks. You may also want to make sure that the tattoo that you choose will look good under the light and without the UV light being present. If you choose not to add any regular ink to your blacklight tattoo, it may end up looking like a scar when not under the blacklight and should be something to consider.

If you decide to get a blacklight tattoo, know that the tattooing process will take a little longer than normal ink. This is because the UV inks are thinner are more difficult to work with. Also, the artist will have to check the work under a blacklight to see how it is looking. The artist also has to be extremely careful not to push the ink used to make the outline into the skin. This is somewhat normal for regular tattoo ink, and is not a problem because the tattoo covers it. But with invisible ink tattoos, you don’t want to see this outline in the visible light!

Either go with just the blacklight ink, or get a normal ink tattoo and highlight it with some UV ink for those times when you are under a blacklight and just really want to stand out.
