Pirate Tattoo Designs

It was sailors who increased the popularity of tattoos in the western world, and pirate tattoos are a favorite amongst sailors. Pirates have fuel our imaginations for centuries. In recent years, especially since Jack Sparrow made his debut in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, pirate tattoo designs have become more popular than ever with tattoo enthusiasts around the world.

The word pirate comes from the Latin word “pirata” meaning a marine adventurer. Pirates are also known as buccaneers, skimmers, scallywags, and freebooters. A pirate is a person who plunders or robs another vessel at sea. Pirates do their work without a commission from a sovereign nation.

There have been many famous pirates over the years. Blackbeard is an icon amongst notorious bad guys. Blackbeard’s real name was Edward Teach and is known for shooting a crewman occasionally, saying “If I don’t shoot one or two crewmen every now and then, they’d forget who he was.” He sailed on his ship “Queen Anne’s Revenge” and robbed many other ships. Blackbeard usually wore many guns in a sling across his chest, and always kept his trusty cutlass sword nearby. Blackbeard died fighting in 1718.

Captain Kidd is another famous pirate. William “Captain” Kidd is most famous for his buried treasure, supposedly buried somewhere in New York. Throughout his career, Kidd could not escape bad luck time and time again. He considered himself a privateer, but was declared a pirate by England and was eventually hanged in London in 1701. Besides the rumors of treasure being buried in New York, there are tales that he buried loot all over the globe.

Today, the most famous pirate is a pirate who never really existed. Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by actor Johnny Depp, was the star of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Jack Sparrow relies on his quick wits, and would rather avoid a fight through slick talking. Jack Sparrow is a very popular pirate tattoo design currently.

Pirate tattoo summon all the emotions that go along with the history of pirates. Danger, rebellion, and excitement are the emotions typically conveyed in pirate tattoos. Pirate tattoos are usually very colorful and bold.

Aside from images of famous pirates, alone or in battle, skull pirates make for great tattoo designs. This is represented with the skull showing an angry face, and typically wearing a pirate hat and bandana. You can further customize this design by placing a sword or knife in its jaws. Add some fire and flames to it for even more spice.

Pinup pirates also make for great pirate tattoos. The female pirates are dressed in skimpier version of normal pirate attire, and can be straddling various objects.

Some other popular pirate tattoo designs include an X (you know, the one that marks the spot of the buried treasure), pirate ships, the familiar skull and crossbones pirate symbol, treasure chests, and a parrot tattoo on one’s shoulder.
